Interviewing Teen Author and Graphic Desginer: J.H.

Today, I interviewed J.H., a teen author and graphic designer, currently working on her book “Loathing My Huntress”, a book that has thriller, adventure, and horror, and planning to publish in 2025. She is best known for her internet personality on Instagram, and the writing contests she’s organized. Now let’s get onto the interview!

Q: How would you describe yourself?

Uh, I guess I would describe myself as pretty outgoing both online and in person. I’m pretty quiet, pretty reserved. Don’t really talk much, unless it’s with certain people, But it’s a little bit because it’s hard for me to trust people. But I really wish to help others; My classmates know me as a pretty quiet person, although they know I’m helpful, whenever I need them to help them.

Q: What inspired you to become a writer and start writing the paranormal genre?

That’s a really good question. First of all, I loved reading books since I was a kid; I remember getting into trouble once when I was 5 years old for reading a book, instead of playing games like everyone else, which was kind of funny. But my mom would read to me when I was little, and then it kept going and going, I even got awards for being a good reader and for reading a ton of books.

And that eventually escalated into writing stories as I kept getting older in my mind, I would even come up with random songs and randomly start singing. My friends always noticed that about me, they would say “You would seem like the type of person to write a book.”, and I was like “Maybe”. And then as time flew by, I started to make my characters in 2020.

However, I didn’t write a book about them, as I was writing another series that I wrote at the time. It was more for the fandom I was in, but I eventually grew out of the fandom and sadly deleted the series. And I started to think, “Maybe writing isn’t for me, so I’ll probably just drop it.”

But the characters I have made still stayed with me, like they were constantly in my mind. So I thought “I think I should just sit down and write something and see what happens next.”

As for the paranormal genre, well I got involved in paranormal stuff way back when I was a kid. I somehow found it interesting and it caught my attention, even though it also frightened me a little bit.

But I found it fascinating how people would come up with horror stories of beings that don't exist. That curiosity or interest in paranormal things led to me creating my characters who are from that genre.

Q: How did you find out about the writing community and start to meet other writers?

I remember when I first started making content about my characters, I did it through TikTok, and that’s where I got some engagement. I started my writing account, I remember January of this year (2024), because I would get videos about “Oh, writers, this and that.” on my personal Instagram, and I realized “Oh, wait there’s a community on Instagram for teen writers? Maybe i should start promoting myself online.” even though I don’t have the book out yet.

Because some of my friends started reading the first draft of my book, and they were like “You should promote this online.” but at the time, I didn’t know how. That’s when I started getting those videos and I was like “Oh wow.”

And I had made my regular account, and started making followers and friends that had the same interest as me, and I had finally found the community I was looking for.

Q: As you stated before not only are you a writer, but a graphic designer. How did you get into graphic design?

So, I will admit that I can’t draw (laughs), I can’t draw for the life of me, so that’s sad because I have all of these characters in my mind and I wish I could draw them- and that would be so amazing. But my sister can.

So I started my Writergram using slideshows, and I realized that they weren’t that engaging, and I didn’t really like them either. So I decided, I needed to make something that would make viewers more engaged, something engaging but also informative. So I started using Canva because I had used it for my college classes and other assignments, I was like “Hmm, let’s see if i could maybe do something with this.” And then I started to change the way I did my posts, and started getting better and better, and then I started to like my posts much more, and then I realized “This is graphic designing.”

Something I never thought I would ever actually do, and then I thought since I’m doing really well with my page, maybe I should consider expanding my talent and see if others would like to have me work for them.

So now, I would for the magazine “Calm Form” which is a zine for teen writers, I also work for ‘Write Till’ You Make It” podcast, and I’m also working for “Blanket Magazine”, though I don’t do graphic design for them, I’m a writer on there platform because it is more focused on psychology, as I'm studying psychology.

Q: How did you make and devise the idea for your series?

For my series, I remember when I first created my characters, I had a whole completely different plot for them, I made so many changes now than last time. And I like seeing how they changed throughout the years. How I’ve gotten better in my writing skills, but also in the way I wanted the plot to turn out.

I didn’t have much of an idea for the series, I just thought this would be one story and then we would call it a day, but then I realized there’s too much information I can’t just put in one book. Like, there are so many characters besides the main one that are also really important. So I decided to make it into a series, and that’s how I made the series.

Q: In your writing process, what does your mental state look like?

So my writing process, it’s pretty good. I do my best to write at least a few words a day, especially now for my second draft. As you know, I’m a college student, I have assignments to worry about, i have exams to worry about, besides focusing on my writing and my Instagram. And when I have graphic design, I have to worry about it too because of deadlines. It’s a bit of a struggle, it’s not easy managing collage and then graphic design, but I like doing it. When I write, I go into my world, think about

what I’m going to say, write what I’m going to do. So I managed to balance it.

Q: What do you wish your future to look like once you publish your book?

Oh, my future.. I would say I want to continue studying, I’m graduating from high school in May of 2025. I’m currently applying for universities and I want to continue my studies in psychology. I’m not sure which job I want with psychology, though I’ll try my best to study it.

And while I keep going, and publish my book, I am going to keep writing. I have other story ideas, besides the story I’m working on right now. I also write poetry sometimes, so I want to keep studying, and write, and continue graphic design, and keep moving forward until I’m where I wanna be.

Q: What do you wish for your writers once they read your book?

What I wish for my writers, is that I know my characters are a little frighting, they have a few habits that are normal, but I don’t want my readers to focus on what they look like from the outside, because I know, they’re disgusting, horrifying creatures, but I want them to make a connection with my creatures, or notice how they act personality-wise.

Because I feel like humans in general, we criticize a lot from the outside then we focus on the inside of the person, so I would want them to focus on how they behave, what makes them become who they are now.

Q: And finally, what advice would you give to other young writers who are just starting out?

The advice I would give to young writers who are just starting is not to be afraid to post about themselves, I know there are a lot of problems with plagiarizing, I got plagiarized once, and it’s not a good experience. But also understand, even if that happens, if you have the writing community behind you, they’re going to help you get back up. They are going to help you not get plagiarized or not let anything bad happen.

So, don’t be afraid to show your work, because that’s how others are going to be interested in your work. And one day, when you are ready and publish your book, they are going to be the first ones to buy it.

And you are also going to make a lot of friends who- despite the different age gaps there are a lot of different age gaps in the writing community. There are adults, there are teenagers, and there are also other younger people. The age doesn’t define you when you choose to start your writing journey. So you should just feel comfortable, and make friends who will be your biggest supporters, And that’s the best advice I can give you.
